Arrows At Dawn
1 Samuel 18:1–9, 1 Samuel 20:30–42 · World English Bible
1 Samuel 18:1When he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
1 Samuel 18:2Saul took him that day, and wouldn’t let him go home to his father’s house any more.
1 Samuel 18:3Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
1 Samuel 18:4Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David with his clothing, even including his sword, his bow, and his sash.
1 Samuel 18:5David went out wherever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely; and Saul set him over the men of war. It was good in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
1 Samuel 18:6As they came, when David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul with tambourines, with joy, and with instruments of music.
1 Samuel 18:7The women sang to one another as they played, and said,
Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.
1 Samuel 18:8Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said,
They have credited David with ten thousands, and they have only credited me with thousands. What can he have more but the kingdom?
1 Samuel 18:9Saul watched David from that day and forward.
1 Samuel 20:30Then Saul’s anger burned against Jonathan, and he said to him,
You son of a perverse rebellious woman, don’t I know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness?
1 Samuel 20:31For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, you will not be established, nor will your kingdom. Therefore now send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die!”
1 Samuel 20:32Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him,
Why should he be put to death? What has he done?
1 Samuel 20:33Saul cast his spear at him to strike him. By this Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death.
1 Samuel 20:34So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month; for he was grieved for David, because his father had treated him shamefully.
1 Samuel 20:35In the morning, Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little boy with him.
1 Samuel 20:36He said to his boy,
Run, find now the arrows which I shoot.
As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
1 Samuel 20:37When the boy had come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the boy, and said,
Isn’t the arrow beyond you?
1 Samuel 20:38Jonathan cried after the boy,
Go fast! Hurry! Don’t delay!
Jonathan’s boy gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.
1 Samuel 20:39But the boy didn’t know anything. Only Jonathan and David knew the matter.
1 Samuel 20:40Jonathan gave his weapons to his boy, and said to him,
Go, carry them to the city.
1 Samuel 20:41As soon as the boy was gone, David arose out of the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times. They kissed one another and wept with one another, and David wept the most.
1 Samuel 20:42Jonathan said to David,
Go in peace, because we have both sworn in the LORD’s name, saying, ‘The LORD is between me and you, and between my offspring and your offspring, forever.’
He arose and departed; and Jonathan went into the city.
